SAKUGAWA KOSHIKI SHORINJI-RYU

Nothing excites man's curiosity so much as a mystery -- concealing things which he desires to know -- and nothing so much increases curiosity as obstacles that interpose to prevent him from indulging in the gratification of desires.

Karatedo masters often conceal the highest truths under the veil of allegory, the better to excite the student's curiosity and cause him to investigate. Impiety is beyond those of profound knowledge.
Therefore, karatedo is a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. It is based on mathematics, geomancy, and a philosophical search for truth.
Sakugawa Koshiki Shorinji Ryu Karatedo is truly a miraculous art.

The student will learn the understanding of and adherence to dojo etiquette and protocol. They will learn the understanding and use of basic karatedo terms.

All students will learn the understanding of the history and philosophy of karatedo and basic principles of body mechanics, breathing and muscular expansion as well as contraction. Students will learn the ability to stand and move correctly; to perform basic punches, strikes, kicks and defenses. The ability to perform and receive joint locking techniques, throws and pins. The ability to train with others with safety, realism, and mutual respect.

The ability to perform and interpret all relative kata from the required karatedo syllabus. Understanding of the application of karatedo to self defense situations, including ethical and legal obligations, strategy, tactics and techniques.

Like all complex motor skills, karatedo techniques can be mastered only through careful coaching and constant repetition. The goal is to be able to execute any technique spontaneously, under any circumstances, with correct form. Correct basic training techniques is essential to the effective use of karatedo for self defense. Proper use of body mechanics, breathing and muscular contraction and expansion allow even small people to generate tremendous force. Karate techniques performed without correct application of these basic principles can be more dangerous to the person doing them than to anyone else.

Kata is the essence of karatedo. Many kata are known to be at least 150 years old and date from the period of Okinawan history when karate training was conducted in secret. Achievement of kyu and dan gradings depends on learning kata and performing them correctly. Kumite is an essential aspect of karatedo training, providing necessary insights about the realistic application of techniques.

Kumite develops spirit, humility and courtesy. Kumite is not fighting. Mutual respect and safety are mandatory. Aggression and egotism are not qualities to be encouraged but obstacles to overcome. Students who fail to grasp this point will never succeed in karatedo.

Kobudo is the use of traditional Okinawan weapons such as the bo and sai. Kobudo kata in Ogasawara Ha are typically learned and practiced only by students at the brown belt level or above..
